POT for Fall 2012

We are busy planning for fall. The plan so far:

POT All-Day Workshop: Strategies and Tools for Online Teaching

Tuesday, August 14
9:30 am – 3:50 pm, lunch included
Flex time: 6.5 hours
Limit enrollment: 35 participants
Cost: $20/person includes lunch (check payable to Academic Senate, with PDP on memo line, sent to PDP)

Instructors of all levels and styles are welcome to join us for an all-day exploration of the strategies and tools that can be effectively used for online, hybrid or on-site classes that use web technologies. Beginning with developing good course design through individual pedagogy, participants will work hands-on with a selection of proven teaching tools and explore how they can be used to realize instructional goals.  If you have attended an all-day POT workshop in the past, there will be some new additions this year.

Please bring your laptop computer or smart phone if you have one.

Participants will receive 6.5 flex hours for participating (attendance of less than 6.5 hours may be recorded on the sign-in sheet).

POT Online Teaching Certificate Class at Pedagogy First!

Class begins September 1 for a free, open, online experience in learning to teach online.  Contact Lisa during the summer if you’d like to join – you will be starting your own blog and following a syllabus that runs 12 weeks in fall and 12 weeks and spring. Those who complete the tasks may earn a POT Online Teaching certificate and badge.

POT First Fridays at Oceanside 4804

Come and discuss your online teaching adventures with fellow faculty members.  Individuals with no, little, some, and a lot of online teaching experience are all welcome.  Each First Friday will focus on what the group wants to discuss, however, prompts will also be provided to start the discussion.  Questions are welcome, too!
This workshop benefits faculty by giving them ideas that may improve instruction.

September 7 – 3:00-3:50 p.m.: Engagement – What do you do to engage your students in online classes?

October 5 – 3:00-3:50 p.m.: Time/energy management – How do you manage your time/energy as an instructor and how do you help your students manage their time/energy?

November 2 – 3:00-3:50 p.m.: Evaluation – How do you have students evaluate your classes and how do you evaluate your students’ work?

December 7 – 3:00-3:50 p.m.: Renewal – What are your plans for your future classes?  What did you learn or what do you want to try next?

Beginning February 3, our First Fridays this semester will be at Oceanside campus in 4804, hosted by Laura Paciorek. Each  will feature a discussion and experimentation workshop for individuals interested in online teaching. The first part of the workshop will feature a focused discussion, suggested by the facilitator and/or attendees, then participants can move to computers in the lab to practice and or demonstrate some of the things we discuss. Each First Friday workshop may have a different focus and can evolve based upon interests.  There may even be some mini demonstrations and guest presentations. Topics:

POT Book Discussion Group: Connections: Virtual Learning Communities

We are pleased to announce POT’s first book book discussion group, led by Laura Paciorek from 3:00-3:50 pm on each First Friday, following the Discussion/Experiment Workshops.

Third Thursdays Online

Beginning Thursday, February 16 at 3 pm, we will have online presentations and discussions in Collaborate (previously Elluminate) as part a collaborative effort with other community colleges whose faculty are involved in the Pedagogy First! online certificate class. Everyone is welcome to join us. The topic for February 16 is “Control and Freedom in Online Classes” (Collaborate Recording is here).  Sessions will be at either 11 am or 3 pm to accommodate our international participants.

With Blackboard, instructors create and manage course content, use publisher content, evaluate performance, and communicate with students. This workshop will introduce you to the course building and communications tools in Blackboard.

Are you still using Internet Explorer? At a loss when that URL you clicked on in an email doesn’t seem to work? Frustrated at how long it takes to find something useful on the web? Uncertain where to go to get past the crud that seems to litter the web? Or maybe just looking for a few tips and tricks to become more powerful in your use of the Internet? This workshop will help you develop greater comfort with the Internet and your web browser.

Sharing mini-lecturettes, replying to students, demonstrating a method, or providing students with feedback on their assignments/quizzes can be achieved with screencasting. We’ll focus on learning the basics of Jing, and providing your students with a tour or introduction to your class, website, or learning unit. Hands-on included.

This workshop will introduce you to powerful tools from Google enabling collaborative writing, analysis, data gathering, and presentation; real-time discussions; and even building a website. You just might learn some tricks to make your Google searching more powerful, too.

 1:00-2:20 Enhancing your productivity (and maybe student learning) with free web-based tools
      with Jim Julius, OC4607

Did you know that free tools on the Internet can make you (and maybe your students) more productive? This workshop will introduce five tools to help you be a more effective reader and note-taker, resulting in information customized for you, easily searched, and available on any Internet-connected computer. The tools we’ll try out include Evernote (for note-making), Google Reader and RSS (to automatically gather the latest information from your favorite websites), diigo (to save and annotate useful websites for later reference), Dropbox (for storing and sharing files “in the cloud”), and Instapaper (to save content-oriented websites for later reading, without clutter).
